Creating An Interactive Boxer - 3D Animation

The Client

GestureTek™ is the pioneer, patent-holder and world-leader in camera-enabled gesture-recognition technology for presentation and entertainment systems.  GestureTek has installed approximately 4,000 interactive multi-media displays, kiosks, exhibits, digital signs and advertisements, virtual gaming systems and other interactive surface computing solutions, many with multi-touch interactivity.

The Problem

GestureTek was developing an interactive boxing kiosks that allowed visitors at a sports stadium to experience a boxing event from the perspective of the boxer. Gesture recognition technology developed by GestureTek watched the visitors' hand movements allowing them to control a boxing avatar on a large screen. GestureTek was seeking a creative studio that could provide the art work and animation sequences needed by their gaming engine. They needed a studio experienced in the game development process and that understood the challenges related to mixing together multiple layers of animated footage and development of characters from concept to finished product.

The Solution

ThinkingMedia began the process by designing a Model Sheet of the boxing opponent. Several revisions of the boxer were revised by GestureTek until they were happy with a design. This boxer design was transferred to a special 3D sculpting tool that allowed artists at ThinkingMedia to create a 3D representation of the main character.

ThinkingMedia allows for client feedback and revisions during all steps through the creative process. Incorporating changes from GestureTek allowed character design to match their objectives and design goals.

This 3D sculpture was transferred to a 3D application where a skeletal bone structure was added. Our animator created animated sequences of the boxer performing a series of maneuvers. Everything was packaged and delivered to GestureTek in a format compatible with their game engine and technology.

Why ThinkingMedia?

GestureTek was looking for a company that could develop characters from concept, to animate those characters and then to deliver animations that were compatible with their unique gesture-recognition technology.
